Today my daughter will be performing with the Marimba group at the County Fair. Well, since I’ll have to pay to get in, we might as well enjoy some of the FAIR FOOD while we’re there.
I don’t know what I should search out first… the curly fries… the elephant ears… corn dogs… corn on the cob slathered in butter… so many choices!!! It’s been a long time since I went to a fair (well, we did take a walk into the small neighborhood fair a few weeks ago and had some curly fries…). I’m looking forward to this… I think ;~)
It’s becoming glaringly obvious that summer is nearly over…
Produce is getting more expensive
Kids are getting antsy
Schedules are getting busier
Tonight as I drove home in the rain, I considered my options for weeknight meals. I need to get some more soups into my "line up"… soups that are easy to throw into the crockpot in the morning, or even into the oven. My fave chili recipe is a Hearty Oven Chili! MMMMM I’m currently searching for a divine Minestrone soup (preferably one that the meat-eating boys in the family won’t even miss the lack of meat!) Of course, the likely solution will be that I will find several elements from many different soups and end up making my own recipe……
We didn’t get to take our vacation this summer, as originally planned/hoped….. maybe next year we’ll get in a vacation. But tomorrow the kids & I will head on an overnight trip with a couple of my friends and their kids. Should be a fun trip, and hopefully the sun comes out so we can enjoy the pool!!! We’ll work together on the food, and I’m sure the kids will basically run WILD! It’ll be good for them…..
I’ll have to pull the leftovers from the last few days’ dinners to the front of the fridge so that My John will eat something good while I’m away. It’s just one night… I know he’ll survive!
This weekend we had a celebration for My John. He got to choose where we went and what we did. He’s been wanting to go up Chuckanut Drive for a long time now, so that’s where we went. It’s a gorgeous drive, beautiful views and a great place for fresh shellfish.
We found Taylor Shellfish Farm and got a couple dozen oysters and a couple dozen clams. Today we’re getting ready to cook them up on the BBQ and share then with My John’s family. Of course, I think we got too many… because after we stopped at Taylor’s, we ended up stopping at Grandpa’s Oysters down the road and got another 5 dozen! ACK! We’re trying to figure out how to freeze them and use them up later, now.
I’ll be sharing some pics of the drive and of all our food later this afternoon/evening……
Yesterday was Haden’s Birthday! He’s 8… 8… WOW! Not really sure how this happened! But, here he is… 8.years.old…
After last year’s big bash (we held 4 kids’ parties all together, and used the school’s Multi-purpose Room for a movie showing… so.much.fun!), I told the kids we were keeping it small this year….. Haden decided to just have friends come over (he was allowed to invite only 2 friends if we were going out anywhere…)
I made it a detective theme, with invitations in "code" by using a card making program and putting the print backwards (so it had to be read in the mirror). It’s all his friends talked about for days! It was so cute!!! My girlfriends at the Kitchen helped me with the cake (well the ideas and how to do it!) A magnifying glass cake was pretty easy to make, once those awesome girls told me what to do. 2 round cakes, one of them cut so I have just the middle of it in a long strip. I got black coloring for the icing to make the "frame" of the magnifying glass, and edible glitter to make the "glass" seem more "glass-like".
Party planning ended up being very last-minute, as I was out of town last week and working most of this week. So it was coming down to 2 days left for planning and buying, etc…. and Haden announces "NO party games" What? How do you give a birthday party with no party games?!?!? But he was quite insitent upon it. Not even a scavenger hunt! ACK! That was plan for keeping them all occupied for a long period of time. LOL Haden wanted to just play games on the tv (we don’t have any cool video game systems… just a few games that plug into the tv, like a Hotwheels racing game, Pac-Man, etc…. nothing fancy) and he also wanted to play outside. Well, at least I was done with the party planning! lol
Of course, when a child has a Birthday, it is almost expected that Mom will bring in treats for the whole class at school… OY! Who has time for making treats for a class, PLUS for a party??? Uncle I to the rescue! He’s the local baker, so I took him a cupcake-shaped cookie cutter and said PLEASE! So he made the cookies… and then I decorated them (picture is in the photo album… turned out pretty cute!)
Once I got the kids to school and some errands taken care of, I finally had time for the cake! I had already baked it, so I just needed to get it frosted. Have you EVER tried to make black frosting? OY! Even with black coloring, it’s a pain! And it dyes EVERYTHING in it’s path… but not BLACK! No, not black… this coloring made everything pink, purple and every shade in between!!! And it was then… as I was cleaning up the dark fingerprints I had made ALL OVER my kitchen (this was just a few hours before the party, mind you!)… yes, then I realized what this party was missing! FINGERPRINTING!!!!! What little boy, obsessed with detectives and spies, etc wouldn’t like to be fingerprinted and have an ID badge made? I called our local police station to see if they had fingerprinting kits… they did!
So the party was a hit, and the kids all went home with Detective notebooks, complete with their Agent name and number, along with fingerprints and ID cards (and the rest of the kit from the police station, which included a DNA kit, etc for parents to have in case, God forbid, something were to ever happen….)
Great Birthday! Good friends! Fun Times! And the kids even ate some of the fruits and veggies I had out for snacking on! I love when kids make healthy choices (they did still eat the cheese puffs, too… but at least they ate *some* of the good stuff! lol)
Menu planning for the week will be posted soon…..
G’Nite…. go check your menu and see what’s for dinner tomorrow!!!
Tonight My John gets off work early (since he went in early…) And the kids are at their dad’s for the weekend… so we’re having a much-needed date night! I found some Tender Beef Filet at the store, and we’ll grill that up. I’ll serve up some wild rice & a big salad to round out the meal.
We’ll also get to enjoy a glass of wine with dinner, since he isn’t going back in to work tonight. Of course, we aren’t pairing the "proper" wine with the "proper" food….. isn’t red wine supposed to go with beef? Well, we don’t really like red wine…. so we’ll enjoy our favorite Columbia Winery Cellarmaster’s Riesling! MMMMMM If you haven’t tried this wine, you MUST!!! We tried several wines before ever finding a wine that we actually enjoy, and now I don’t want to buy anything else! lol
Have a great weekend!
Yes, it was BUNCO night! My night out with the girls to eat, drink, roll some dice and have lots of laughs. The laughs were on ME tonight as I finished out the night with 3 wins and 15 LOSSES! I still had a ton of FUN!!! Got a nice prize for being the biggest loser, too. LOL
I always fix something really GREAT for BUNCO! It’s a potluck in our group, and everyone has come to expect me to make something that looks awesome, but that I can tell them HONESTLY is NOT difficult to make at all (even for a novice in the kitchen…) Well, last night I was visiting with a couple friends, talking about my new Trifle Bowl that I wanted to use and make something great in it. But I was at a loss and really didn’t have the time today, anyway! So I was challenged to NOT COOK and to instead layer M&Ms in the bowl…. LOL So I did…. it really made for a beautiful display piece. Several handfuls were eaten and I got everyone to even take a few handfuls HOME with them because I just don’t need that much candy in my house. LOL
Yes, I got a picture of the bowl all filled with colorful candies…. but this old computer isn’t really capable of loading in all my picture software and getting the pictures loaded!!! I’ll add this to my list of things to post when I get my computer back…..
Have a great weekend!!!
Tonight is BUNCO! I always love going. Something that’s just for me. And everyone brings food, so there’s lots of great things to try!!! Some plan out what they are bringing for weeks at a time (guilty as charged, here! lol) and others just bring whatever sounds good to them that day. But it’s always something great.
Tonight I am bringing a cheese board filled with lots of fun cheese…. bleu cheese, brie, etc…. I’m excited to see what everyone else is bringing along (one gal will be bringing her mac & cheese that she is now famous for!!! lol That stuff is awesome!!!!! MMMMMMM)
I’m taking Haden off to a friends’ birthday party in a bit and Felicity will hang out with me and help me with the cheese board. It’ll be a bit of "girl time". If we had more time, we’d bake something…. but we won’t have time, I don’t think….. but maybe we’ll try to squeeze it in 😉
I had a great visit with a group of friends this morning. We met for coffee at a great little coffee with comfy couches and chairs. Many topics were covered, and food always comes up. Isn’t that the way it is? We’re a nation obsessed with food! And I had with me my new copy of Real Food, by Nina Planck. I’ve only started reading it, so I’m not very far. But I like her views!
My friends are like me. They steer clear of "conveniece foods" as much as possible. We find a way to eat as a family. Sometimes schedules simply conflict, someone is working nights, someone else has a game at night… but on the nights that everyone is home, we eat at the table! I can get pretty creative in how I get everyone around our table….
Back to the coffee…. it seems that the busier we get, the more we need to visit with friends, but the less it happens because we’re busy. It’s a vicious cycle! Most of my friends are at-home Moms (I will NOT say they don’t work… being a Mom is the most important job any of us can have!!! And it’s not a lazy-person’s domain to stay home with kids and chores all day long…). I work a lot, but my hours allow for a lot of flexibility and I find myself often feeling like I am an at-home Mom, since I do get to make it to games, concerts, etc… But there’s no time in the day to just sit and visit! I see my friends daily… in passing as we drop our kids off at school, or pick them up from school and activities.
I want to challenge everyone to just find time… reconnect with your friends! Meet for coffee! Make it a Wednesday morning routine and meet your friends for coffe! Drop the kids off at school and go have some "girlfriend time"!!! You’ll be amazed how helpful it will be in your life! Exchange recipes for a new food you got your picky eater to actually try and LIKE! Time-saving tips, homework tips, whatever! Just get together and visit!!!! You can’t just feed your body, you need to feed your mind and soul! What better way to do that than visiting with friends!
What a day!!! First, I must say something…
OK, that’s out of my system! Anyone else see the game? WOW! Talk about stress, huh?
On the menu… Uncle Bubba’s Wings (a Paula Deen recipe… thank you Amy for letting me know about this one), Tropical Fruit Salad, Potato Salad… others brought with them Ranch Wings, Bourbon Chicken, veggies, crackers, chips, dips and devilled eggs. As always, too much food! But it was fun!
You’ll notice in the recipe I posted for Tropical Fruit Salad that it calls for a fresh coconut! Yes, I actually did split a coconut! I took the water and put it in a cup for possible later use. I grated most of the meat from the coconut for the salad, and there is still quite a bit left. I think I’ll toss what’s left of the coconut in with the plain yogurt I bought for smoothies!
Tomorrow I think I’ll do a little baking. I’ve got the fish in the fridge to thaw, as well as the spaghetti sauce for making lasagne. I’ll probably put that together tomorrow since Mondays are crazy for me, so on Monday when I get home from Camp Fire I’ll just be heating it up!
I plan to make up some menu plans for thenext couple weeks, and will post those as I finish them. I want to change a few of my usual recipes to add a little extra something to them…. I’m considering using pepper jack cheese in stuffed peppers, instead of the usual cheddar. And I want to play around with making paninis, now that I have a press for my grill pan!
OK…. I’m getting hungry again…
